If you’re a dog lover, it’s likely that you are fond of the German Shepherd breed. These large dogs sometimes get a reputation for being dangerous and hostile because of their size, but many people misunderstand the breed.

Although they are used as police K9 officers, this doesn’t mean that they don’t make great pets for the average family.

German Shepherds can also be sweet, loyal, and great companions. Obviously, such as the case with many animals, you get what you give.

If this breed of dog is well taken care of and feels your love, it will give you affection and gentle nature in return. However, if you treat these dogs with cruelty and neglect, they may show their hostility, similarly to any other breed. One shepherd named Rocco knows just how bad these negative stereotypes can impact the lives of a dog.

How is it Monday already?!

Rocco belonged to a family that decided to take on the responsibility of caring for a German Shepherd. He was loyal, loving and caring to the family that took him in. However, because of his breed, he grew very large and was powerful with strong teeth and legs. According to the Dodo, when his owners realized that they were pregnant, they began to worry about having him around their future child.

Because breeds like pit bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds have negative stereotypes and bad reputations, the family got paranoid and decided to make an emotional and sad decision. The family ended up taking Rocco to an animal shelter in Dallas. Rocco felt saddened after being abandoned and became introverted and apathetic towards life.

Unable to adjust to shelter life, he was withdrawn and showed no interest in humans or other dogs. However, one day the shelter got a visitor that would turn around Rocco’s story. She decided to foster him at her house with her own dog. The foster knew that she needed to get Rocco adjusted to trusting humans again, and she did her best to get his weight up and make him into a playful and loving animal again. After creating an Instagram account for Rocco, she began posting adorable videos and photographs of the dog trying to find him a good home. Thankfully, he was eventually adopted and will never be abandoned again.

Clearly, animals are able to develop trust issues from abandonment and it’s important to realize that animals are a lifelong commitment that all deserve loving forever homes.
