Woman Gives Back £27m That Was Accidentally Transferred By Her Bank

A woman got a very brief glimpse of life as a millionaire when her bank accidentally transferred the equivalent of £27m into her account.

However, her fleeting brush with extreme wealth never actually amounted to anything as she immediately decided to give the money back.

After all, she only ended up with it by mistake.

The fantastically named Ruth Balloon said that she received an almighty shock when she checked her bank account after clocking out of work last Tuesday to discover that there was suddenly a huge amount in there.

$37 million (£27m), to be precise.

Imagine, if you can, checking your bank balance to see something that isn't a crushing disappointment.

Her initial hope was that someone had - for whatever reason - decided to give her a load of money, but she decided that she'd better quickly run a check with her bank to see what was going on.

Unfortunately, they told her that the $37m that had been put into the account was - of course - in error.

Balloon, who is from Dallas, immediately gave the money straight back to LegacyTexasBank without a single thought.

Afterwards, she told KTVT: "I was like, 'wow, we have a lot of money'."

Yep, that's a rational response.

She continued: "I was a millionaire. I have a screenshot of it so I can say that now. It's quite a story.

"I hoped someone really gifted us with that $37 million."

As we've covered, they hadn't.

However, that didn't stop her spending a bit of time daydreaming about what she'd do if she was allowed to hang on to the cash.

She explained: "First I was going to do 10 percent tithing [giving money as a percentage to the church]

"Then I was going to donate some money and then I would have invested in real estate."

That all seems fairly sensible. You'd have to imagine that her church are also slightly disappointed to discover that it was all a mix-up.

Although they've avoided themselves an ethical quandary, for sure.

A statement from LegacyTexasBank said: "On Tuesday, December 10, our client made a foreign currency deposit into her LegacyTexas account. Due to the fluctuation in exchange rates, all foreign currency transactions must be manually entered into our system through our back office.

"When our client's deposit was being keyed in, our representative entered her account number into the amount field by mistake."

Following the mistake, Balloon said that she had never dreamed of simply keeping hold of the money. She just wants a simple 'thank you' from the bank for doing the right thing and notifying them.

That's the least they can do, to be honest.
