US election live: Donald Trump 'mortified' over election loss

Donald Trump's refusal to accept he lost the presidency shows he is "truly shocked" about the outcome, one commentator claims.

Welcome to our live coverage of the fallout from the US election.

President Donald Trump spent the morning after his defeat to Joe Biden watching TV and fuming from the White House.

Mr Trump tweeted quotes from guests on Fox News’ morning programs to bolster his baseless claims that the election result was fraudulent.

“We believe these people are thieves. The big city machines are corrupt. This was a stolen election. Best pollster in Britain wrote this morning that this clearly was a stolen election, that it’s impossible to imagine that Biden outran Obama in some of these states,” former Republican politician Newt Gingrich said, in one statement repeated approvingly by the President.

“Where it mattered, they stole what they had to steal.”

Mr Trump’s refusal to accept he has lost the presidency shows he is “in denial” about the outcome of the election, Washington Post columnist and senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School David Ignatius claims.

“President Donald Trump is in denial. I think he is truly shocked, mortified, that he’s been beaten by Joe Biden,” Mr Ignatius told ABC’s 7.30.

“He’s a man of enormous confidence, as he told us. He really hates the lose. And coming to grips with that loss is difficult for him.”

Our live coverage has ended for the day. Here’s how it unfolded.

"But what Trump sought to do, he set out to exacerbate those divisions and turn Americans against each other for his own political advantage," Mr Turnbull said.

"And while that may have helped him electorally, it has left America more divided, more fractured, and hence weaker than it has been in years past."

Mr Turnbull then claimed Mr Trump wasn't a conservative like many people would think.

"Trump is not a conservative. Conservatives defend institutions. They are in favour of incremental change. Trump is an authoritarian populist. It's all about him," he said.

"He has put his own narcissistic self-interested agenda ahead of everything else. And the big loser has been the United States.

"And the only people that would genuinely get pleasure out of this are America's enemies."
