A former suburban footballer who dragged a Melbourne nurse down a city alleyway has been spared jail.

Jackson Williams had been out drinking when he grabbed the 39-year-old from behind as she walked to work through the CBD early on October 28, 2018.

The 21-year-old was found not guilty of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offence last month.

He was convicted for an alternative charge of common assault.

On Wednesday, Williams was spared jail and given a two and a half year community corrections order.

He must complete 200 hours of unpaid community work and has been banned from licensed venues for six months.

He was also sentenced to 42 days in custody, which is time already served on remand.
